Thermoviscoelastic analysis of delamination onset and free edge response in laminated composites

Time-dependent boundary-layer stress fields near free edges in laminates due to mechanical and hygroscopic loadings are analyzed using finite element methods. Numerical results for (45/-45) kevlar/epoxy laminates subjected to moisture absorption cycles or time varying uniaxial extensions are presented. The delamination initiations in (15/-15) T300/934 graphite/epoxy laminate are predicted as functions of time and loading history
