Controlling of an automatic voltage regulator using optimum integer and fractional order PID controller

In this paper an integer order and fractional order proportional plus integral plus derivative (IOPID & FOPID) controller is designed to control an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. The parameters of the IOPID controller are tuned using Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) method and further optimized by grey wolf optimizer (GWO). The FOPID controller is also designed for the betterment of the synchronous generator excitation. The parameters of the FOPID controller are optimized using Nelder-Mead (NM) method. Simulation results validate the performance characteristics of the FOPID and IOPID controller.
