Abstract A novel control strategy has been presented and successfully applied in control of four coal-pulverizing systems with ball-tube mill and storage bunker which are used in a 200 MW unit, i.e. Unit 4 of Jinzhou Power Plant in China. Neural decouplers are designed to decouple these Multi-Input-Multi-Output nonlinear systems. To enhance the adaptability of the control system, a expert system is employed to identify the operating conditions online. Satisfactory industrial results show that such a control system has strong adaptability, and remarkable performance and economic benefit have been obtained.
