Energy-efficient sensor optimisation in wireless sensor networks

Wireless Sensor Networks WSNs contain small sensor nodes collecting data in various forms helping to analyse the environment in many ways. Energy of the sensor nodes is valuable and scarce; it is vital to reduce energy consumption in order to improve lifetime of WSN. An excellent way to do so is to divide sensor network into groups of cluster and sink nodes, where clusterhead acts as leader of the cluster. For WSNs it is very important to use a method which automatically arranges the sensors in clusters such that minimum energy is used to communicate information from all nodes to the respective base station. As the degree of the correlation in the data increases with the decrease of separation between sensor nodes, these sensors are observed to be highly correlated producing high data redundancy. Combining both methods, we propose in-network compression and optimum clustering to optimise large WSNs.
