Economical analysis of NG-optical backbone transport network

In transforming their optical transport networks, operators must consider multiple choices to determine the appropriate approaches in terms of the network design and optimization with newly available technologies, the network transition and evolution strategy and maximize at the same time the return on their investment. For instance, they need to take into account the network architecture such as ring versus mesh, fixed WDM versus T/ROADM, 40G or 100G versus 10G/40G/100G, integrated OTN switch versus separated OTN or MSPP switch. In this paper, we attempt to resolve these challenges by means of total cost of ownership analysis of a comprehensive case study with multiple different network architecture options. The economics impact (total cost of ownership) is thoroughly explored in terms of CAPEX and OPEX to differentiate the solutions options.
