Cytomorphologic features of nonspecific granulomatous mastitis diagnosed by imprint cytology.

by these entities is that they mimic breast carcinoma on both physical examination and mammographic study.1 Nonspecific granulomatous mastitis (NSGM) was first described by Kessler and Wolloch.2 Since it was first recognized as a separate clinicopathologic entity, a total of 65 cases had been reported by 1994 in the English-language literature, with a few more case reports published up to the present.3 We think that due to the clinical similarity between NSGM and breast carcinoma, imprint cytology performed inside the operating room (perhaps additionally to frozen section) could provide the surgeon with accurate and useful information concerning the diagnosis of the disease and extent of the operation.
