STEP meets PREMO: Product modelling and new presentation techniques

Abstract In computer graphics standardization the development of the next generation has started. Addressing new presentation techniques as well as graphics and multimedia functionality, the requirements of future application systems have to be solved. Therefore, within ISO/IEC JTC1/SC24 PREMO, the Presentation Environment for Multimedia Objects, was initiated and today a new work item supported by an initial draft is available and will be further developed within the working group 6. One of the applications is the area of product modelling and CAD/CAM, where the Standard for the Representation and Exchange of Product Model Data, STEP, is under development. The initial release of STEP is planned to be accepted as ISO standard IS 10303 in 1994. This paper presents the status of these two developments and discusses the relationship and the requirements, as well as the possibilities of presenting the product data.
