Design of SAW FIR filters for quadrature binary modulators

The results of several surface-acoustic-wave (SAW)-based quadrature modulators are presented. By carefully designing the SAW device, a broad range of quadrature modulator systems can be evaluated. The modulator approach is based on exciting the SAW symbol with a data pulse. The SAW device is carefully designed to eliminate distortion effects and is designed to compensate for known and controlled system effects. Results of nine different modulators are presented for measuring AM and ISI. Time and frequency domain results of iteratively designed quadrature modulation systems are given, and good performance is demonstrated. The approach shows that experimental investigations of a broad range of quadrature modulators are possible using SAW devices as the key component.<<ETX>>
