Robust and LPV control of an AMB system

Active magnetic bearing spindles are predominantly subject to periodic disturbances due to an unbalanced mass. The frequency of these disturbances is known to be same as the operational (rotational) speed. LTI controllers provide for good disturbance attenuation only in very limited circumstances, i.e., when the operational speed is fixed or is very low. In the event of continuously changing operating speeds, LPV controllers can be very effective for disturbance rejection. In this research we study two robust control designs and an LPV control design method to demonstrate the far reaching performance benefits of the LPV controller.
