INTRODUCTION TO LANDSLIDES AND ENGINEERING PRACTICE

LANDSLIDE INFORMATION TO CONTROL, DESIGN FOR, OR CORRECT THE MORE IMPORTANT TYPES OF LANDSLIDE MOVEMENT IS SUMMARIZED. THE DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM SECTION IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE ENGINEER WITH THE TOOLS AND METHODS TO SOLVE AN ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL LANDSLIDE PROBLEM. THE SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM SECTION SUMMARIZES THE METHOD KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF LANDSLIDES. METHODS ARE DISCUSSED OF MAKING STABILITY ANALYSES AND OF USING THEM IN THE SOLUTION OF DESIGN PROBLEMS. THE WORK IS DESCRIBED OF THE COMMITTEE ON LANDSLIDE INVESTIGATIONS SET UP BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SOILS INVESTIGATIONS, HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD. THE COMMITTEE SPONSORED PUBLICATION OF A BIBLIOGRAPHY ON LANDSLIDES IN 1951. THIS VOLUME WAS COMPILED BY THE COMMITTEE USING DATA FROM QUESTIONAIRES SENT TO THE STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS, STATE GEOLOGISTS, THE LARGER RAILROADS IN THE UNITED STATES, THE CANADIAN RAILROADS, AND ALL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES CONCERNED WITH MAJOR ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION WORK.
