Development of a low cost foot-scanner for a custom shoe making system

INTRODUCTION We have developed an analysis method of 3D human body forms using the Free Form Deformation technique (FFD). With this method, the spatial deformation data obtained when a human body form is deformed to match a target form can be utilized in designing new product shapes (Figure 1) . This method is suitable for the CAD/CAM of custom products and e-commerce. Using plaster models of feet to investigate the basic methods used in designing custom shoes, the need for more practical, less time-consuming methods of capturing the 3D foot form was identified. Thus, a low cost foot scanner was developed as a part of custom shoe making system.
