Privacy Protection Using a Rechargeable Battery for Energy Consumption in Smart Grids

Since the emergence of smart meters, they have played an important role in providing energy- efficient and economical service in smart grids, and they have been extensively deployed. Meanwhile, the incessant energy consumption data collected from smart meters also poses a serious threat to customer privacy. In this article, we present a systematic study of the state-of-the-art privacy- preserving schemes for smart meters. First, we introduce and formulate the technical challenges existing in practice. After that, we categorize and review several representative privacy-preserving schemes according to their respective design goals. Finally, we introduce three common quantitative evaluation metrics for privacy loss, and analyze the privacy leakage of the state-of-the-art schemes.
