The accuracy of lymphangiographic diagnosis in malignant lymphoma.

Lymphangiography has been widely applied to the study of malignant disease in recent years (1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 23). The procedure has been most rewarding in the diagnosis and management of malignant lymphoma (13, 14, 17, 22), as well as lymphedema (11). There remains some skepticism toward the method, based largely on the technical difficulties, the complications, and the occasionally equivocal diagnostic value (2, 4, 7, 10, 15). Perhaps the most difficult aspect lies in its demands for skill and experience to yield consistently correct interpretations, while the other problems can readily be surmounted. The present study was undertaken in an effort to assess and improve the criteria for lymphangiographic diagnosis in lymphoma. Methods and Material The lymphangiograms of 206 consecutive patients with malignant lymphoma at the Stanford Medical Center were analyzed. The technic employed has already been described (1). In those patients without evidence of active disease, follow-up examinations are obtained at...
