Continuous, online monitoring of freestanding, oil-filled current transformers to predict imminent failure

A power-factor-monitoring scheme used successfully to predict catastrophic failures of current transformers on the Tennessee Valley Authority's system is discussed. The method permits removal of the equipment from service before a failure occurs. Other monitoring and relaying schemes have also been evaluated, and the results are compared. >
