Papercut: Digital Fabrication and Design for Paper Cutting

Chinese Paper-cut is an ancient folk art being thought to have originated in the 6th century. In traditional paper-cut, it is necessary for workers or amateurs who have fertile imagination and professional cutting skills to achieve good visual enjoyment. However, this posed a challenge in pattern design and a dimensional imagination barrier in fabrication, it also requires sufficient training in cutting patterns on paper. Motivated by these issues, we propose a novel system to help generate paper-cut pattern and give the fabricating instruction with digital design and interactive technology. Our system is expected to spark the creativity of paper-cut pattern for designers, lower the fabricated barrier for novices, and promote the development and application of paper-cut.
