Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) Systems in Emirate of Abu Dhabi

This paper describes how international best practice in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology is being applied to support the development and delivery of a network of Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) Stations in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Overweight trucks present an on-going road safety hazard to other road users, as well damaging the road infrastructure. The anticipated reintroduction of truck weight limits, as a recommendation from internal (DoT Divisions) as well as external stakeholders(other government entities), underpins the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DoT) requirement for the implementation of a flexible and effective network of truck weight and condition inspection facilities to enforce new legislation. A review of international best practice for truck weighing and traffic control technology identified techniques and applications that could be adapted and applied to meet the specific needs of Abu Dhabi. A study of the existing and future truck road network (up to 2030) identified strategic locations for additional WIM stations in support of the existing facilities. Developed designs and phased deployment are anticipated to significantly reduce the incidents of truck overloading providing the corresponding benefits for road safety and longevity of the infrastructure.
