Towards Improved Performance Efficiency in Rural Wireless Mesh Network (RWMN) Deployments

Data availability and reliability are two significant performance indicators in Wireless Mesh Networks deployed for broadband `access, which affect the quality of experience (QoE) for end-users in rural domains characterized by rapid topology changes particularly developing Africa. Effective caching well-tailored to rural specifics using an efficient underlying routing protocol can achieve significant performance improvements. Firstly, the need for objective evaluation of the efficiency of protocols utilized for rural deployments to increase the benefit of caching is arguable. This paper proposes joint strategies to mitigate throughput degradation by employing random-path cache request methods and exploiting the broadcast wireless nature to cache overheard data on all participating nodes. The overall effect will reduce response time for access of data objects, reduce data access cost and optimize congestions via load distribution towards uplink gateway. Given the above; guarantee for enhancing network throughput, resilience, and reliability becomes practical.
