Los adenovirus como causa de gastroenteritis aguda en los niños

Objetivo: Identificar tempranamente los adenovirus en ninos con gastroenteritis aguda. Metodos: Estudio retrospectivo, se seleccionaron 1,619 ninos menores de 16 anos con diagnostico de gastroenteritis infecciosa que ingresaron al hospital en los ultimos cuatro anos; de estos a 501 se les hizo la prueba de diagnostico rapido en la busqueda de adenovirus en heces. Resultados: La frecuencia de los adenovirus fue de 9.9% en su mayoria lactantes. Las manifestaciones clinicas fueron un cuadro subagudo de diarrea profusa, acuosa y mucosa, con una duracion media de cuatro dias; en 40 (80%) ninos hubo vomito, la mitad tuvo fiebre, dolor y distension abdominal. Solo hubo un caso con deshidratacion severa; la biometria mostro una cuenta leucocitaria normal con monocitosis y linfocitosis. Conclusion: Los adenovirus son causa de gastroenteritis aguda en menores de dos anos, por lo que se recomienda la prueba rapida para hacer un diagnostico precoz y evitar el empleo de antibioticos en estos ninos
