Simultaneous optimization of aperture and feed line of a microstrip patch antenna

Simultaneous optimization of aperture and feed line of a microstrip patch antenna was made possible and easy by utilizing the sophisticated parameterization scheme of a commercial electromagnetic simulator. The accuracy and speed of the simulator was examined against measured data. Both circular and rectangular apertures were considered. Optimized antenna shows a 20-dB improvement in return loss and an increase in bandwidth.
