When visible or IR energy is propagated through falling snow, a dominant feature of the scattering pattern is a diffraction lobe which is sharply peaked in the forward direction. A correction based on diffraction made to the single-scattering coefficient is used to develop a simplified model which describes radiative transfer in the forward direction and which may be used to explain the observed variation of extinction with wavelength.
