The use of models in potato breeding

How models can be of help for breeding activities is reviewed from literature and from some recent data. The examples as presented show that models can be used for evaluating breeding strategies and for analysing some complex genetic characteristics and identifying their most promising components for selection in breeding programmes. Modelling plant-pathogen interaction may give indications about the durability of various types of resistance. Limitations to the use of models in breeding programmes are discussed.
