IN-SERVICE STRUCTURAL MONITORING. A STATE OF THE ART REVIEW

This paper presents a state of the art review (SOAR) of techniques for monitoring the in-service behaviour of structures, drawing attention to the range and use of available instrumentation. Consideration is given to recent developments in instrumentation and to the requirements for data processing and interpretation. There is a developing role for knowledge-based systems and other artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for aiding the interpretation of data obtained from a monitoring scheme. Active and semi-active structural control do seem to have potential and these are a logical extension of structural monitoring and associated AI techniques.
