ACM Press Database and Electronics Products: New services for the Information Age

948 In 1987 ACM entered a new phase in providing services to members and to the computing community at large by arranging with the American Mathematical Society to provide on-line access to its Computing RevieuJs and Guide to Computing Literature publications. These databases will be made available soon for searching through systems from BRS, Dialog, and the European Space Agency Network. Also in 1988 the text of Communications of the ACM will be stored as part of the "Computer Library" CD-ROM (Compact Disc-Read Only Memory) product available through Ziff Communications Corp. Subscribers will be able to search through issues beginning with January 1987, and ultimately will have three years of Cammunications recorded on each disc, along with a number of popular trade publications. Furthermore, the text of the July 1988 issue of Communications has been made available on tape and diskette-based products for use on popular workstations and personal computers. Users will have first-hand experience in the use of hypertext software (where the appropriate use of links between text points and segments greatly enhances the original value) as they read or refer to key ideas and developments in hypertext. This document describes activities and plans for ACM's new venture into database and electronic products. Following an introduction to the technology and materials available is a sketch of how an ACM Electronic Library would open new possibilities. We invite you to consider this of rl~"" ......r>+.rt.r> to offer your suggestions and assistance, and to help ACM expand its role as a provider of information services for the computing profession.
