EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF CLUSTERED PARACHUTES INFLATION

An experimental investigation of the inflation process of clustered parachutes is currently being conducted at NRDEC. The experiments are conducted indoors with a cluster of three 14'-diameter circular parachutes. They are vertically dropped with a 30' long static line. During inflation, opening forces, vertical velocity, vertical and horizontal canopy areas, and canopy angular positions are measured. In addition, experiments on a single canopy are also performed for comparison. This progress report presents some of the important experimental measurements and observations.
