Bibliography and index

Alfred Adler" stressed many years ago the importance of family size, sex of siblings, and birth order as part of his personality theory. In recent years research into the correlates of birth order has pro liferated rapidly, and Miley' listed a bibliography of 119 articles on birth order published between 1963 and 1967. The present bibliography updates Miley's previous work. It con sists of '27'2 entries dated 1967 to 1971, indexed under "birth order" in Psychological Abstracts between December, 1967, and May, 197'2. The 391 entries of the two bibliographies together are distributed over the nine years 1963 to 1971 as follows: 17, '23, '21, '28, 53, 61, 65, 71, 5'2. There is then a steady increase, with a leap between 1966 and 1967. The 1971 entry of only 5'2 items is incomplete as of the time of compiling this bibliography. The bibliography is followed by an index of the variables studied, based largely on information derived from the titles of the papers. Although such an attempt at indexing is necessarily arbitrary, never theless it provides general information on trends in the birth order literature and a basis for comparison with Miley's earlier bibliography. Notable among the shifts in emphasis are the considerably greater number of entries relating birth order to attitudes and opinions, to creativity, to vocational choice, to personality, to sex-role identity, to socialization, and to psychiatric problems. Likewise, research on the methodology of birth-order research increased greatly. Foreign language entries are omitted from the index to provide greater comparability to Miley's previous index, in which such entries
