DC ageing of low density polyethylene insulation with protrusions at the electrodes

The ageing process in a polymeric insulation under HVDC conditions may be accelerated in the presence of protrusions. In this work low density polyethylene insulation with needle-shaped electrodes was subjected to electrical and thermal ageing. The polarity of the applied DC field was either kept constant or reversed every 5 minute. After 4 weeks ageing with constant polarity the DC breakdown level was unaltered or even improved. Ageing with polarity reversals reduced the DC breakdown level of LDPE with antioxidant by 25%.
