Thispaperdescribes thedevelopment ofa detailed mathematical modelofarepresentative study system toexamine theimpact ofFACTS-based closed-loop control ofACpoweron the dampingof subsynchronous torsional modes.The mathematical modelisanadaptation oftheIEEEfirst benchmark system forthestudy ofsubsynchronous resonance, extended to include a controllable series compensator andpowerflow controller capable ofoperating inboththeconstant powerand constant angle modes. Thepaperbriefly considers theinfluence of eachsuchmodeofpower flowcontrol ontorsional modedamping. reported in(8)couldalsoinfluence thedampingofany subsynchronous torsional modesintheshafts oftheturbine- generators that feedthepowersystem. Thispaperdescribes thedevelopment ofadetailed simulation modeloftheIEEE first benchmark system forthestudy ofSSR,together with suitable enhancements, toallow anin-depth investigation of theeffect ofclosed-loop powerflowcontrol onthedamping ofsubsynchronous torsional modes.
