Segmentation of Touching Characters in Mathematical Expressions Using Contour Feature Technique

Touching symbols cannot be segmented accurately which is one of the main reasons for false recognition of typeset mathematical expressions. To solve this problem, a technique which is based on contour feature is presented for the segmentation of touching symbols in mathematical expressions. Partitioning paths can be constructed ground on contour feature and the ratio of the width and the height, and then touching symbols are segmented. Experimental results show the effectiveness on the accuracy improvement of mathematical expression recognition.
