Introductory story: Building trust among scientists, authorities and the public

A case study involving Juan Barragan, a Mexican village located 8.4 km away from one of the nation's most active volcanoes, the Volcan Colima summit, is presented. Juan Barragan was founded by approximately 20 families in 1979. Cooperation was needed between the Juan Barragan community, government officials, and scientists in developing evacuation and sheltering plans in the event of volcanic activity. The cooperation shown in the case study is used to demonstrate cooperation and understanding needed on a greater scale worldwide between the three parties - communities, governments, and the scientific community.
