Migration of subgrain boundaries under stress in bi- and multi-granular structures

The rates of subgrain boundary migration are compared for multi-subgrain structures formed during steady state deformation in Al as well as LiF and for individual tilt boundaries separating two subgrains in an Al bi-crystal. Individual boundaries migrate much faster than those in subgrain boundary networks, unless bulk dislocation motion occurs. With concurrent bulk plastic deformation individual boundaries are slowed down to rates comparable to those in subgrain boundary networks. It is concluded that stress is the dominant driving force for migration during deformation and that the migration rate depends sensitively on boundary structure. (© 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
