A PID controller design method using stability margin with transient improvement criteria

In this work, a PID controller design approach is broached for achieving specified stability margin with improved transient in terms of minimal overshoot. A set of non-linear equations is considered based upon the specified stability margins and a minimal overshoot criterion. The minimal overshoot criterion is demonstrated with an example. Thereby, the PID controller parameters are obtained by solving the equations with the help of MATLAB. Simulations for three examples taken from the literature having different dynamics are illustrated and compared favourably with some PID controllers prevalent in the literature to validate the efficacy of the proposed method.
