Design for Sustainability in Composite Product Development

The concept of design for sustainability (D4S) with reference to natural fiber reinforced polymer composites is presented in this chapter. D4S is a new concept that grew with the concept of design for “X,” where “X” can represent recyclability, manufacturability, durability, and so on. It is understood to address all facets of sustainability; we are looking at bigger systems and asking more fundamental questions about consumption and production. The concept of D4S traverses beyond EcoDesign by including social and economic factors into design coupled with environmental impacts. It provides more opportunities for more stakeholders to take part in product development. As far as the natural fiber composites are concerned, concurrent engineering is strongly linked to the D4S because the design of natural fiber composite products fulfils the requirement of the design for sustainability, that is design for well-being of future generation. Discussion on D4S of natural fiber composite materials for automotive and packaging applications is also highlighted in the current chapter.
