THE CORRELATION BETWEEN ENGLISH LEARNING MOTIVATION AND ABILITY TO READ DESCRIPTIVE TEXT OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 15 PADANG

Abstract This study is an exploration of the correlation between English learning motivation and ability to read descriptive text of the first grade students of SMPN 15 Padang. The design of this research was correlational research. The population of this research was 30 first grades students of SMPN 15 Padang. In selecting the sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling . The total number of sample was 30 students. The researcher used two instruments, they are questionnaire and reading test. To know the reliability of the questionnaire, the researcher used Alpha formula. It was found that the coeficient of questionnaire was (.80) and for the reading test was (.81). It means that the test was reliable.The result of the data the correlation between English learning motivation and ability to read descriptive text of the first grade students of SMPN 15 Padang was (.750) high corelation. For reading test, the percentage of students in high group was 83.33 % and the percentage of students in low group was 16.67 %. It means that the students in SMPN 15 Padang has good ability.Based on the result of the reasearch, it could be conluded that the students For teachers, in order to improve students’ reading ability, teachers should give students’ motivation in learning English and increase their reading ability and better in English For students, in order to improve their reading ability, they should build their motivation with some external and internal motivation.For the next researcher, they should consider other factor that correlate with students reading ability.
