Dual field oriented permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive using a single DSP controller

Traditionally high performance drives utilized dedicated controllers to perform complicated mathematical operations. However, several factors are rapidly changing this scenario. The current DSP controllers can now integrate a variety of sophisticated peripherals. This integration of DSP core with a set of useful power electronics peripherals significantly simplifies the drive design and also allows designers to implement high performance drives using a single DSP controller. This paper presents an implementation of a dual permanent magnet synchronous motor drive using a single DSP controller. The drives utilize field oriented control to achieve higher performance. The DSP controller utilizes the on-chip power electronics peripherals to achieve independent control of each drive without adding any off chip components thus bringing significant system design simplification as well as total system cost reduction. This paper presents the complete hardware and software modules needed utilized to implement the dual PMSM drive.
