(d,. cap alpha. ) reaction and the. cap alpha. particle D state

The recent suggestion that the effects of a D-state component of the ..cap alpha.. particle are being seen in (d, ..cap alpha..) reaction tensor analyzing power data is reexamined using exact finite range distorted-wave Born approximation calculations. Results for /sup 32/S(d,..cap alpha..)/sup 30/P(g.s.), at E = 16 MeV, are at considerable variance with two-nucleon-core relative motion amplitudes derived from shell model calculations.
