Internal pattern-switchable 1.0 wavelength loop antenna array for satellite smartphone applications

This article presents a novel internal pattern-switchable high-gain antenna array design for satellite mobile phone applications. By designing two sets of two-element 1.0 wavelength folded loop antenna array at top and side edge of a handset ground respectively, four different directional and steerable fan-shape radiating beams can be formed successfully to cover the 360 degree parallel with and surrounding the handset ground. Peak antenna gains and radiation efficiencies of the four radiating beams are better than 4.5 dBi and 60 % in the desired frequency band. The proposed design could be one of promising pattern-switchable antenna solutions for the future smartphone devices integrated with satellite-link functions. The constructed prototype has been studied in this paper.
