DERMATOLOGY OF THE 1870'S; PATTERNS OF OCCURRENCE OF CUTANEOUS OISEASE (1871–1874)

The Skin Dispensary of the University of Pennsylvania, the first U. S. dermatology clinic to be located within the physical confines o£ a medical school, was begun by Louis A. Duhring in June 1871. Until recently nothing was known of the cutaneous diseases seen in this clinic except what could be inferred from Duhring's Atlas of Skin Diseases'^ and Practical Treatise on Skin Diseases,^ as these included many cases originally observed in the clinic. We recently discovered the earliest records, dating from the Hrst patient in June 1871 to May 1911, and believe that an analysis of these data would provide an interesting comparison with the modern practice of dermatology.
