Dynamic performance of a sub-optimal controller

Abstract The dynamic characteristics of a sub-optimal controller for a dual-source heat-pump system for space heating are explored. Simulation results indicate that the controller, through its adaptive gain and the feedback path, is able to respond effectively to changing loads. Optimization of the system parameters has been investigated by carrying out sensitivity tests. The results are combined to show the effect of several different parameters on the purchased energy requirements. It is found that by sub-optimally controlling the heat pump, the purchased energy requirements for domestic heating can be significantly reduced. Application of the sub-optimal controller to other building service systems is illustrated with an example.
