Design of a DSRC Based Embedded System for Intelligent Transportation

With the rapid incensement of personal vehicles, urban traffics congestion is now a prominent problem in many major cities in China. Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) is an efficient solution for traffic jaw problem. This paper introduces an embedded system designed for Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) standard based ETC system of China. In this system, a STM8L151G micro controller was used to build two interfaces. The first is an UART interface to host computer for system configuration. The second is a SPI interface to radio frequency front-end for data transmission. FM0 decoding was implemented to fulfill the data format of the DSRC standard. The embedded system was design to have flexible compatibility so that it is capable to be adapted for different RF chips. All functions were tested and results show that the designed system can be a potential mobile compact solution for intelligent transportation system in the future.
