Collaboration and Visualization: Integrative Opportunities

Collaborative computing and visual computing have tremendous potential to improve human performance in both individual and team situations. However having been studied as different streams of research, the synergistic potential of these technologies has not been exploited. This paper presents a unifying conceptual model – the Collaborative Visualization Research Framework – to examine those synergies. The framework addresses the fundamental problems in collaborative and visual computing by taking a uniquely integrated approach that advances research in each area while intently investigating their interaction in collaborative visualization environments (CVEs). In the discussion of future research directions, four application domains with overlapping needs for visualization and collaboration, but with different emphases, are also profiled – business decision-making, engineering design, software design and knowledge management.
