Introduction to Thermodynamics Based on Simulations and Hypertext

The possibilities for supporting the learning process by use of computer simulations are permanently expanding due to the fast growing graphical capabilities of modern workstations and enhancements in the field of interface design. Until recently a problem was raised by two conflicting demands: to offer a maximum of choices for exploratory learning and to offer guidance for a successful learning path. The method to integrate simulations and hypertext offers a perfect solution for this problem. The application of this method is shown for a developed course introducing thermodynamics. For this course some simulations have been developed using Xdev, an authoring tool which allows teachers with only a little programming experience to create simulations with high performances interfaces. All applications based on Xdev are automatically controllable by hypertext documents, most likely in html format. Examples from this course material with integrated simulations will be demonstrated.
