Extended alcohol trading hours during the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games and traffic accidents

During the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games 39% of the hotels, clubs, restaurants, cabarets and bistros in the Brisbane Statistical Division were granted extended trading hours. Analyses using confidence intervals and chi-square analyses for both the daytime and high-time revealed that the increase in availability did not result in additional casualty or property damage accidents. An intensive traffic law enforcement campaign during the Games may have offset the predicted increase in traffic accidents due to the additional availability of alcoholic beverages.
