UWB Fading Characteristics in a Typical Office Environment

This paper investigates the slow- and fast-fading characteristics of an ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse transmission in a typical office environment. 924 impulse responses were recorded in 24 locations over a single floor and analyzed according to path topography. The standard deviation of the slow-fading was empirically determined to be less than 2.68 dB for all topographies. The fast-fading characteristics were also investigated to capture the less predictable scattering behavior of the environment. Results show that the complex scattering amplitudes of the elemental scatterers are uncorrelated for all topographies. We conclude that the UWB channel can be modeled as a WSSUS channel.
