ROBUST SYMMETRIC PATTERNS IN THE FARADAY EXPERIMENT

Symmetric patterns were recently obtained in the famous Faraday experiment by using a special liquid. A model is developed to explain the robustness of the observed patterns. A dissipation mechanism is introduced phenomenologically and shown to be responsible for the stabilization of patterns with several symmetries. The resulting system of nonlinear equations resembles the well-known Turing equations used to study pattern formation in biological systems.
