Error correction for wireless haptic communication

Recently, following visual and audio information, transmission of tactile sensation has actively been researched in the field of telemanipulation. For the realization of haptic transmission, master and slave systems should be utilized and these systems have to be connected via network. In communication via network, it is known that a communication delay, packet loss and jitter cause undesirable effects on control system. Moreover, in wireless mobile communication, there is a problem that the error rate and the jitter are increased by fading. The adverse effects caused by fading are mainly dealt with by error correcting technologies of communication system. For example, there is convolutional code and viterbi decoding in data link layer. In addition, the check sum function is used in transport layer. This paper pays attention to the influence of frequency change of the communication caused by fading on mobile haptic communication. Moreover, this paper evaluates the performance of wireless haptic communication in terms of two error correcting technologies.
