Technology and Formative Assessment

This article provides a discussion of how technology can be used to support implementing quality assessment, especially formative assessment. It first considers the meaning of formative assessment, why it is such an important assessment activity, and how technology might support implementation of a range of assessment functions including formative assessment. Examples of technology-based applications are presented, including large-scale, district- or state-level commercial systems that have become prominent as well as small-scale, content- and classroom-based diagnostic systems often derived from cognitive research. It concludes with a brief discussion of current opportunities and future possibilities.
