Promoter selectivity of prokaryotic RNA polymerases.

Abstract Bacterial cells contain multiple interconvertible forms of RNA polymerase, which differ either in the molecular species of the sigma subunit or in their association with accessory transcription factor(s). These differences in structure affect various functions, including promoter selectivity. The structural and functional modulation of RNA polymerase can now be regarded as one of the global regulatory mechanisms for selective transcription of different gene sets in prokaryotes.
