Blood supply of mobilized intestine used for an artificial esophagus.

The methods of creating an artificial esophagus are numerous, but most of them have been given up as imperfect. The creation of an esophagus out of a small intestine transferred into the subcutaneous tunnel of the thoracic wall according to Roux-Herzen-Yudin's method is considered as the best method in esophagoplastic operations in cases of serious burns; in cases of medium and slight burns S. S. Yudin's transpleural method is given preference. Between 1928 and 1955, plastic operations for an artificial esophagus were performed in the Sklifosovsky Institute on 696 patients; only in 6 of them was the skin used, and in 2, the large intestines; in all the other cases the small intestine was used. These impressive figures prove the unquestionable advantage of creating an artificial esophagus wholly out of the small intestine. In uneventful total small intestine esophagoplastic operations it is possible to create within two weeks a new
