Road markings recognition

One of the main task of the road network managers consists in repainting the used road markings. In France, this work is performed by private companies or DDE (Directions Departementales de l'Equipement). To improve road painting a new vehicle was developed called Marodeur. The repainting process was still quite manual, controlled by the operators watching onboard monitors. In order to increase the productivity and quality and to improve the work conditions of the agents, the MRA project (which stands for automated repainting module) has been started; it consists of the development of Marodeur's automation. The development of a system focusing on a local area and charged with precise over-painting of the existing used road markings has taken place at the LRPC (Laboratoire Regional des Ponts et Chaussees) of Strasbourg in 1992.
