INCREASED FIBRIN/FIBRINOGEN DEGRADATION PRODUCTS (FDP) DURING PREGNANCY AND THE PROGNOSIS OF THE FOETUS

Abstract The occurrence of fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) was investigated in 4,909 consecutive pregnancies during the last trimester (Nilehn's immunochemical method). 63 of these showed FDP levels of 20 μg/ml serum or more on at least one occasion. This group contained 34 pregnancies classified as abnormal and showed a high incidence of preterm births, twin births and the birth of low birth weight (LBW) infants. Serial determinations of FDP during the last trimester might be of prognostic importance. Raised levels of FDP in the maternal serum should be taken as an early warning sign of a pathologic process threatening the foetus, especially when the FDP levels are constantly high.
